7 cryptocurrencies to watch in 2018 if you’re on the hunt for the next bitcoin

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/7-cryptocurrencies-to-watch-in-2018-if-youre-on-the-hunt-for-the-next-bitcoin-2017-12-12

A massive bubble? A passing fad? A scam?

Whatever the cynics out there want to call bitcoin, its BTCUSD, +1.61% insane rally continues to befuddle the haters and enrich the crypto faithful.

Fear of missing out can have a powerful — and dangerous — influence on financial decisions. It’s playing out in a big way right now as many of those who’ve missed out on the digital currency craze kick themselves and frantically search for the next bitcoin — or something even better.

But does that even exist and is it worth the risk to invest?

While he’s still extremely bullish on what lies ahead for bitcoin, George Tung, co-founder of Cryptos R Us and a veteran of investing in cryptocurrencies, says there’s still plenty of upside opportunity in lesser-known coins.

“Will we see another coin with a market cap exceeding bitcoin?” he said. “Yes, I believe that is definitely possible within the next three to five years.”

Hitesh Malviya, the crypto consultant behind ItsBlockchain.com, says that bitcoin is obviously the place to be during bullish explosions like the one we’re seeing right now, but, in the long run, the big gains in cryptos lie elsewhere.

“The alts industry is new and it will take at least a few years to become mainstream,” he said, adding “we can see 10x gains — like bitcoin this year, in many alt-coins.”

But with more than 1,300 alt-coins — basically any digital currency that isn’t bitcoin — to choose from, it’s no easy task uncovering potential winners. Tung uses a four-part screener to determine which alt-coins may be worth a flyer.

1. Study the team behind it. “Where do they come from? Have they been involved with other cryptos before? Are they backed by anyone, and what kind of experience do they bring? The alt-coins that have done the best and have the highest market caps have the most proven teams.”

2. Take a look at the why. “How useful is this? Are they trying to solve a problem that doesn’t need solving? Some alt-coins coming out are simply ridiculous.”

3. Determine where they are in the process. “I look at the road map of the alt-coin and see how far along are they. Do they have a test-net or a beta? Are there new features being released? Are there soft or hard forks coming up?”

4. Assess the valuation. “Since alt-coins get pumped and dumped a lot, I look at the current market evaluation and see if they are priced right. A lot of alt-coins are priced way too high and I tend to stay away from them.”

With that in mind, here’s an overview of seven cryptocurrencies that analysts have said may be worth watching in 2018. Like bitcoin, all cryptocurrencies are subject to extreme volatility and risk -- so if you intend to invest, it’s well worth doing your due diligence and reading up more on each one.

Litecoin (LTC)

Market cap: $17.78 billion

Performance in 2017, as of Dec. 11: +4,800%

Who created it? Former Google GOOGL, +1.37% employee (and now notable star in the crypto universe) Charlie Lee

The skinny: Litecoin has been described as the silver to bitcoin’s gold.

Created by Lee back in 2011, it’s billed as an alternative to bitcoin. Without getting too wonky, Lee essentially aimed to cut the amount of time required to confirm new transactions and tweak the way bitcoin was being mined to ensure anybody could participate. “My vision is people would use Litecoin every day to buy things. It would just be the payment method of choice,” Lee once said.

Litecoin is also designed to produce more coins -- it has an 84 million coin limit, versus bitcoin’s 21 million. About 54 million coins are currently in circulation, versus bitcoin’s current 16.7 million circulating supply.

Monero (XMR)

Market cap: $4.84 billion

Performance in 2017: +1,930%

Who created it? Much like bitcoin, Monero’s creator is anonymous.

The skinny: The appeal of Monero? Anonymity. With Monero, the details of every transaction, including sender, receiver and size, are recorded on a public ledger, but are obfuscated to reportedly make them untraceable. Use Monero, and, in theory, there’s no way for anyone else to connect the dots between the sender, receiver or size of the transaction.

Sound like an appealing coin to cybercriminals? It is. The hackers behind the global ransomware incident WannaCry, which infected 230,000 computers running Microsoft Windows, demanded payments in Monero.

That said, there are many more cases recorded of hackers demanding bitcoin, and Monero’s backers say the coin’s biggest use cases aren’t illicit. It would appeal, they say, to corporations who want to move money around without competitors knowing, or to anyone who simply doesn’t want their balance and transactions made public, such as someone doing business in a foreign country who doesn’t want to become a target.

Monero recently said 45 musicians, including Lana Del Ray, Sia and Dolly Parton, will be accepting Monero. Many will even offer discounts to those who pay with it.

There are about 15.5 million XMR in circulation, and, unlike bitcoin and Litecoin, Monero doesn’t have a fixed coin supply.

'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' Adaptation Lands Director

The trilogy of horror books that kicked off with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is getting the big screen treatment from director André Øvredal. The filmmaker previously director TrollHunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe, with Guillermo del Toro attached to this adaptation as a producer.

According to Deadline, "The thriller follows a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in their small town. Kevin Hageman and Dan Hageman (The LEGO Movie) wrote the most recent draft based on the books."

Del Toro had previously been attached as a director but, possibly due to his busy scheduled, has stepped aside to have Øvredal take the reins.

The trilogy of books were comprised of short horror stories aimed at children, written by Alvin Schwartz. Originally published in 1984, the books have sold more than 7 million copies. In addition to Schwartz's stories causing nightmares, the iconic series also frightened and fascinated young readers with Steven Gammell's macabre and grotesque illustrations.

The Norwegian TrollHunter was a mockumentary film about a man who was tasked with locating and eradicating various trolls that roamed the countryside in a discrete manner so the public was kept in the dark about the fantastical creatures.

In The Autopsy of Jane Doe, two employees of a morgue attempt to determine the cause of death for an anonymous body, leading them down a dangerous and deadly rabbit hole.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is only the latest project featuring horror stories aimed at younger audiences to get the live-action treatment.

In 2015, Goosebumps featured multiple villains from the book series of the same name coming to life to terrorize author R.L. Stine, played by Jack Black in the film. A sequel will hit theaters in 2018.

Last month, a film adaptation of the TV series Are You Afraid of the Dark? was announced with IT writer Gary Dauberman attached. The Nickelodeon series featured teens meeting every week by a campfire to tell each other horrifying tales. That film will land in theaters in 2019.

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark adaptation is headed into production next summer.

Texas Restaurant Under Scrutiny for Racist ‘Coon Chicken Inn’ Sign

A restaurant in Lubbock, Texas has come under fire in recent days for a racist sign that is hanging up on its wall.

On Thursday, Cook’s Garage responded after a person who attended a Christmas party at the restaurant noticed a neon sign of a black caricature emblazoned with the words “Coon Chicken Inn.” After the person posted photos of the sign on Facebook, the owners of the restaurant posted the following explanation to its Facebook page:

As you can see above, the restaurant owners contend that they did not mean to offend anyone as the sign was meant to represent “Americana history.” Highlighting that other racist collectibles featuring black caricatures are “highly sought after,” they noted that the Chicken Coon Inn was an actual restaurant that existed and that featuring the sign is “preserving a part of history that should remind us all of the senselessness of racial prejudice.”

After the Facebook response from Cook’s Garage went viral and local station WLBT 3 posted a story stating that “some are calling” the sign racist, folks on Twitter reacted.

A ‘commerical’ for Coon Chicken Inn was featured in the 2004 mockumentary C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America, a movie that presented an alternate history where the Confederacy won the Civil War. The 2001 movie Ghost World also used a sign from the restaurant as a plot point.

George Zimmerman Threatens Jay-Z With Violence Over Trayvon Martin Doc

George Zimmerman is threatening to “beat Jay-Z” and feed him to “an alligator” after he claims a production team working on an upcoming Trayvon Martin documentary produced by the rapper harassed his family for interviews and footage.

Zimmerman tells The Blast directly, two weeks ago a production team headed by docuseries executive producer Michael Gasparro made unannounced visits to his parents and uncle’s homes in Florida in an attempt to get them on camera.

He claims that production “harassed,” his family, but refused to elaborate on what the harassment was. He also would not answer whether his family agreed at any point to go on camera with the producers.

In a chilling reference to the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, Zimmerman grimly tells us “I know how to handle people who fuck with me, I have since February 2012.”

Zimmerman seems especially upset over money he claims has been paid to his ex-wife over her alleged participation in the documentary.

He says producers have refused to pay his parents or family members, but would not elaborate on their participation or willingness to go on camera for money.

Zimmerman, however, says he is holding Jay-Z and Gasparro responsible, and “anyone who f***s with my parents will be fed to an alligator.”

Earlier this year, it was announced Jay-Z and The Weinstein Company would be making a 6-part docuseries titled “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” based off the book “Suspicion Nation” by attorney Lisa Bloom. The project will chronicle the life of Martin, the shooting by George Zimmerman in 2012, and his eventual acquittal.

Also, the fate of the project is unclear since the scandal with Harvey Weinstein exposed the ill-conceived relationship between the producer and Lisa Bloom, and has financially rocked the production company.

We reached out to Jay-Z and Michael Gasparro and will update as necessary.

Beat 4 Beat - 9th Wonder or Pete Rock

Beat for Beat

I just got this thread idea I wanted to try out. Only one beat allowed per post, but post a beat from the other producer better than the beat in the post above yours. Instrumentals only please. You don’t necessarily gotta start with their best work, just post something you think at minimum is a better beat than the previous posted. Almost like spades.
===========
(READ)
the main point of saying one beat per post is so that the beats posted fall in sequential order alternating between one Pete Rock beat and one 9th Wonder beat at a time, like a battle (In a battle they only get to play one beat before the other guy answer back with his beat.)
it doesn’t matter who post the next one up, but whoever post first let that one ride till someone answer back with the next one after that..and each poster can contribute more than one beat in the thread, but let it only be one poster at a time keeping in mind that the beats must alternate between Pete and 9th. Again we posting a single beat by either Pete or 9th that is harder the previous beat posted, alternating back and forth between Pete and 9th beats.

I want to see if this can become a like an ongoing series...not sure how successful it can be..i'll have to make improvements as we go along

Also go ahead and vote while you at it.

I’m gonna start this off with a beat from Pete even though I think 9th is technically better than Pete at this point.
