This college student wrote a children’s book to inspire girls to pursue STEM

The tech industry has a gender diversity problem. A 19-year-old from Washington D.C. is pushing back with a new book. Sasha Ariel Alston began writing “Sasha Savvy Loves to Code,” a semi-autobiographical story about a 10 year-old African American girl and her friends attending an all-girls coding camp. Her goal was to inspire young girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math, while teaching some programming basics as well.

When Alston completed the book as a sophomore at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business, she brought it to Kickstarter in an effort to raise $5,000 for “final production, printing, and distribution costs.” There, the book found a wildly receptive audience: “Sasha Savvy Loves to Code” reached its $5,000 goal in four days, and raised $17,602 by the end of the campaign. Alston is still talking with publishers and there is no release date just yet.

What we gain when we support girls in math and science

Even though the book garnered overwhelming support online, while writing, Alston kept it a secret from her friends. Alston considers herself a nerd, but the stigma surrounding coding makes her uncomfortable. “My friends knew that I was interested in coding and they would call me a nerd. They would say a lot of mean stuff,” she said. “My friends didn’t know about the book until I announced it because I didn’t want them to know or say anything about it.”

Part of the problem is a self-sustaining cycle. According to portrayals in popular media, Alston said, “you have to be a white male or boy, and have glasses.” These stereotypes, in turn, can drive girls away from STEM, making the tech industry even more homogenous.

Alston hopes to remedy this trend, at least in part, with her new book.

Alston first became interested in coding in the 11th grade, with an internship at Microsoft. The experience exposed her to a wider range of applications of coding that weren’t being taught in the classroom. It also exposed her to the realities of diversity and representation in tech.

“With all of my internships, I noticed that I was either the only girl or only African American,” Alston said. “My school was mostly African American so I didn’t really know how to interact with anybody else. … Going into the spaces at the beginning felt very challenging and difficult to me.”

Alston was inspired to write the book by an important woman in her life—her mom, or as she calls her on Kickstarter, her “MOManager.”

During a radio interview during her senior year of high school, Alston was asked to explain coding. Her mother Tracy Chiles McGhee, an author herself, thought Alston’s answer was particularly clear, and urged her daughter to write a children’s book. Since then, McGhee has acted as Sasha’s project manager: the two brainstorm together, and despite a nine-to-five job, McGhee helped organize the book-writing process, managing spreadsheets which tracked everything from agents to deadlines.

Other women were also instrumental to the process. A librarian, a school teacher, and two other writers—all mothers—gave their feedback and helped edit the book. “They were able to say ‘my child would probably do this, or my student would probably do that’,” Alston said. Feedback from parents was especially useful, given that Alston learned programming as a teenager and wasn’t sure which ideas younger readers might have trouble with.

The tech industry can be isolating, Alston said, “Even with me in [tech], I still don’t feel necessarily comfortable, because I don’t really think I have anybody that I can truly relate to.” In this sense, Alston and her book are models for the next generation of girls, showing that they can be interested in tech without stigma, that they too can love to code.

Is Slim Shady ready for his return?

Four years after The Marshall Mathers LP 2, Eminem will reportedly release his eighth major label solo studio album on Nov. 17, according to HITS Daily Double.

The news comes shortly after frequent collaborator Denaun Porter said that Eminem was “done” with his latest effort. The rapper-producer later walked back those comments, claiming he was simply trolling the trolls on his Instagram Live feed.

But the revelation also follows rumors about a Pink collaboration titled “Revenge” and its forthcoming music video. It was later confirmed that the song is for Pink’s new album Beautiful Trauma, which drops Friday.

Previously Allen Hughes and 2 Chainz both claimed that Eminem was working on his next album. Tity Boi would later redact his comments, saying he didn’t know what Eminem was up to.

Aside from working on his next solo LP, Slim Shady is also teaming up with longtime collaborator-mentor Dr. Dre for new music for Joseph Kahn’s Bodied, a battle rap-based film that Em is producing.

Sarah Palin’s son Track(wtf?) once again arrested for domestic violence…

Sarah Palin's oldest son, Track, arrested on domestic violence charges

Track Palin, the oldest son of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was arrested Saturday in Alaska on charges of domestic violence. It marks the second time he’s been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in two years.

The charges seem to stem from an incident in his family’s hometown of Wasilla, though further details about what happened were not immediately available.

Palin, 28, was arraigned Sunday morning on three counts: felony burglary, misdemeanor reckless assault and misdemeanor criminal mischief for causing up to $500 in property damage, according to online court records. Each of the charges was related to domestic violence.

The felony burglary charge indicates Palin is accused of hurting or attempting to hurt someone while committing burglary.

Local police and prosecutors did not respond to messages seeking more information Sunday.

No attorney was listed for Palin on the court docket, and no details were given about his bond status. He remained held at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility in Palmer, Alaska, as of Sunday afternoon.

Representatives for the Palin family could not be immediately reached for comment.

Palin was also arrested in 2016 on domestic violence-related charges. He was suspected of punching his girlfriend, who then became concerned that Palin was going to shoot himself with a rifle, according to court records.

He took a plea deal that resulted in some of the charges being dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. His girlfriend later filed for custody of their child, and in January she requested a protective order against Palin.

Sarah Palin ran for vice president on the Republican ticket with Sen. John McCain of Arizona in 2008, losing to the Democratic ticket of Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden. She has since been a television personality and conservative political speaker, and has a strong following among tea party Republicans.

During a January 2016 rally in support of President Trump, Sarah Palin suggested Track’s problems stemmed from post-traumatic stress disorder he developed after a military deployment in Iraq.

“I can certainly relate with other families who feel these ramifications of some PTSD and some of the woundedness that our soldiers do return with,” the former governor said at the time.

I don’t think the PTSD excuse is work for a second time…

The possible US-North Korea War thread

$

This shit should have its own thread. For if it happens, it will be the most significant event in all our lives.

Two most important things that you need to know:

1. On July 28th NK successfully test launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that reportedly reached a maximum altitude of 3,700 km (2,300 miles) and went a distance of around 1,000 km (600 miles). Experts estimate that if the missile was flown on a standard trajectory it would have a range of around 9,000 to 10,400 km.

2. On Aug. 8th the Washington Post reported that US intelligence services concluded late last month that NK can now miniaturize nuclear warheads on its missiles. It has been known that NK has had nuclear weapons for about 10 years.

So if there is a war with North Korea, it most likely will be a nuclear war, and NK now seems to have the ability to reach most of the US (and Canada).

In other words, this shit is no joke.

The is a map of how far NK missiles will need to travel to hit places in the US and Canada:

According to a lawsuit filed against the hip-hop mogul, Birdman is in danger of losing his $14 million dollar Miami mansion, because he is defaulting on a huge loan.

According to reports, Birdman borrowed $12 million dollars from a company called EMG Transfer Agent in 2015 and put up his lavish Miami estate as collateral.

Unfortunately, Birdman is falling behind on his payments, and has defaulted on the loan.

Birdman is currently trying to sell the mansion, which owned by super producer Scott Storch, who sold it to RockStar energy drink boss Russell Weiner for just $7 million, when Storch was a cash crunch.

Weiner flipped the mansion, which has 9 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, a huge pool and breathtaking views of Miami, to Birdman for $14.5 million in 2012.

The same year, Birdman's brother and Cash Money co-CEO Slim, purchased the biggest house in South Florida from the founder of Mattress Giant, for $7.5 million dollars in cash.

Unfortunately for Birdman, his house is still on the market with a $16.9 million dollar asking price as he fights off his creditors.

Is it fair to say that the gods or our higher power is lazy? Or just incapable?

$

As many here may already know, I'm not religious, but I tend to believe there is some kind of higher power out there. Lately, I haven't discussed religion with much people because I consider religion to be something of a scam and it seems more and more people are realizing this, but I remain very open to there being some kind of god or higher power out there. I have flirted with all out atheism before and at times still do, but I can't get around the fact that there seems to be SOME kind of design in the world. As flawed as much of it is......

With that being said, my mom is a nurse and takes care of special needs children. What made me create this thread is that she is now taking care of a 5 year old girl who not only has autism, she was born with a hole in her throat, born a dwarf, cannot speak, and is partially deaf. She needs an oxygen tank at all times. The mother of the girl is a healthy woman who seems responsible, and ironically is somewhat religious. So how the hell does a religious woman give birth to a baby born with all these deformities?

For those who firmly believe or at least think there is a god/higher power, is it safe to say that god/the gods are somewhat lazy? Thousands, maybe millions of babies are born with deformities every year, and while I hear some say god doesn't make mistakes, that clearly isn't the case. Or maybe my expectations of a god are too high? It just seems weird that our "god" can make so many mistakes in life.
