In a week it'll be the 19th anniversary of Illmatic - one of the Greatest albums ever in Hip-Hop history. On April 19th 1994, a young Nasir Jones would team up with AZ, DJ Premier, Large Professor among others. It was a great year for Hip-hop as we bared witness to an album that would forever shake the way we heard and loved Hip-Hop. It also birthed and cemented Nas' place as one of the best MCs ever to grace Hip-Hop.
The first time I heard Illmatic was towards the end of 1994 (I think late December ?), in Canada you gotta realize that cuz Nas wasn't as commercial as Snoop, Cube or maybe Biggie, hearing music from him was really limited - which only made you appreciate the music all the more. I was in Montreal, my father's homeboy (RIP Uncle Ian) took me to get my haircut and the first song I heard was "The World Is Yours". You don't understand, the whole first verse was like a religious experience LOLOL, there was NOBODY that spit like that before. That was the first time I fell in love with the music, after much pestering I finally got my moms to get it for me for Christmas.
"My first album had no famous guest appearances, the outcome - I was crowned the best lyricist"
