A teenage mother is outraged after her high school refused to print a picture of her in the yearbook because it showed her holding her 1-year-old son. Caitlin Tiller, who is now 17-years-old, had her son Leland in April of her junior year in high school. In the fall of her senior year, when Wheatmore High School students took their yearbook photos, she brought him along so that she could pose while holding her son.
Her decision to bring Leland is not random, as the school suggested the students bring props to help make their photos more personal. Other students were allowed to bring sports equipment, instruments and even their family pets.
At the time, the photographer had no problem with Caitlin's decision to bring Leland with her, and it was something she felt was fitting as she was proud of her decision to have the child and stay in school.
'He helped me get to where I am today. I wouldn't be the person I am today without him,' she told local Fox affiliate WGHP. She completed her degree early in order to graduate in December, and started college immediately after in January. She works 30 hours-per-week and raises her son. 'He has helped me achieve my goal to graduate high school and go forward with my dreams,' she said.
She was only notified in April that the school would not allow the photo to run in the yearbook because they feel that it promotes teen pregnancy. When she heard their decision- which they will not change because the yearbook has already gone to the printers- Caitlin told school administrators that her space will run blank without a picture because she did not want to submit one without her son.
'She took responsibility. They should be proud that the students are willing to stay in school graduate and make something of themselves and not try and hide it,' Caitlin's mother Karen Morgan said. This is not the first time that such a photo has been banned by school officials have tried avoid having babies in yearbooks.
