A Belgian man is pulling the plug on his 19-year marriage after he found out his wife was born a man.
"I feel I've been assaulted," Jan, whose last name was not provided, told the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper of learning about his bride’s past, according to the Telegraph.
“I thought she was an attractive woman -- all woman. She had no male traits."
The 64-year-old met Monica from Indonesia when she worked as an au pair for his family nearly 20 years ago.
Jan brought Monica, 48, back with him to Belgium, a task he says “was not easy.”
“The Belgian courts had serious doubts about the authenticity of her birth and her identity papers, but eventually they accepted it anyway,” he explained.
The couple decided not to have kids, because Jan had two children from a previous marriage.
He said Monica duped him by using sanitary napkins while pretending to menstruate.
"Even during sex, I never noticed anything," he said.
It wasn’t until Monica got a new full-time job, Jan said, that he saw another side of his wife.
"My oldest son saw her sometimes at a nightclub,” he told the newspaper. “She began to wear very flashy clothes, those ultra-short skirts or tiny tops, so her abdomen was completely exposed.
Jan also caught her sending suspicious messages to other men.
He finally decided to confront her once he heard rumors that she was born a man.
"I pushed her against the wall and said: Now I know the truth. Are you a man? She then announced that she was born as a boy and that she had been operated on.”
“My world collapsed. That evening came to blows. The police came,” added Jan, who says he is now receiving psychiatric treatment.
He has since tried to annul the marriage, but Belgian courts have rejected his requests. The pair are still living together.
Liliane Verjauw, Jan’s lawyer, said his client was “scammed.”
Monica “has also forged documents used here to get a residence permit,” Verjauw said. “The children, who for years have lived with her, are devastated.”
