Mississippi's Confederate Heritage Month proclamation prompts outcry

The Confederacy is rising again, this time using perhaps the final weapon in its arsenal: calendars.

Mississippi governor Phil Bryant recently proclaimed April to be Confederate Heritage Month, adding an official flourish to a longstanding tradition in his state and several others. April, he wrote in the proclamation, is “the month in which the Confederate States began and ended a four-year struggle”.

Bryant’s proclamation does not mention the central cause of the struggle – slavery – but instead announces the month as a chance to “gain insight from our mistakes and successes” and to “earnestly strive to understand and appreciate our heritage and our opportunities which lie before us”. It also sets aside 25 April as “Confederate Memorial Day”.

The proclamation set off an outcry around the state. Bryant may have expected less-than-universal acceptance of his declaration: he did not issue it on the official Mississippi state website, alongside other proclamations. Instead it appeared without notice on the site of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The SCV is a group dedicated to preserving the vestiges of southern rebellion – including the Mississippi state flag, which is the last in the nation to feature a version of the Confederate battle flag.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) leaders in Mississippi reacted by proposing a civil war remembrance of their own: Union Army Heritage Month.

“These white and black Mississippi patriots fought for the continuation of the United States of America as one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all,” Derrick Johnson, president of Mississippi’s NAACP, wrote to the Clarion-Ledger.

“Should not these soldiers be honored, too?”

Scores rallied on the steps of the capitol, in Jackson. They were diverse. Kathleen Chambers personified a shift in the state’s mentality: she is young and white, and instead of a southern drawl she spoke with the universal up-talk of young people.

“Any white people I know? They’re not OK with this,” she said to the local television station WAPT.

Of Bryant, she said: “He’s trying to turn a Confederate heritage into a good thing, when it’s not. It shouldn’t be celebrated. Especially we shouldn’t celebrate owning people in the past.”

Other states around the south – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas and, until a few years ago, Virginia – celebrate similar months, with variations. Unlike Mississippi, Alabama’s proclamation keeps the cause of the war in view: “Our recognition of Confederate history also recognizes that slavery was one of the causes of the war, an issue in the war, was ended by the war and slavery is hereby condemned.”

Virginia may be a bellwether for the fate of the Confederate calendar. The last time Virginia declared such a month, in 2010, the backlash was immediate. On 8 April that year Governor Bob McConnell issued a lengthy apology to the citizens of his state and amended his proclamation.

“The proclamation issued by this office designating April as Confederate History Month contained a major omission,” he wrote. “The failure to include any reference to slavery was a mistake, and for that I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed.

“The abomination of slavery divided our nation, deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights, and led to the civil war. Slavery was an evil, vicious and inhumane practice which degraded human beings to property, and it has left a stain on the soul of this state and nation.”

McDonnell injected this section into the middle of his proclamation: “WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and all Virginians are thankful for its permanent eradication from our borders, and the study of this time period should reflect upon and learn from this painful part of our history.”

In Mississippi, Bryant has showed no inclination to include such an acknowledgment. But Clay Chandler, the governor’s director of communications, told the Times-Picayune in Mississippi: “Like his predecessors – both Republican and Democrat – who issued similar proclamations, Governor Bryant believes Mississippi’s history deserves study and reflection, no matter how unpleasant or complicated parts of it may be.”

And, he said: “Like the proclamation says, gaining insight from our mistakes and successes will help us move forward.”

Tell us about that notch on your belt that you would rather forget about.

Be vivid.

I'll start.

She was the security guard at my dorm unit back in college
National Security is what we called her. She was a local chick, not really the greatest looking but
she had this enormous ASS.... it was Wide.. like, too wide for her legs... it was intriguing yet odd.

I was only 1 down in the smash department. She was feeling me so i was like ... "EHHHRRAAAA... OK"
Basically she did all the pursuing, I just went with the flow.

No dates no nothing... I snuck her into my dorm room (back stairway). I was ashamed a little
but I wanted to bust a nut.

she's in my bedroom. We'd been kissing in my dorm room twin bed all night.
Eventually it was time for actual penetration.I have no shame admitting fellas,
but I couldn't get it up. I think my d*ck was tryna tell me something like....
" N*GGA, HER ???"

I eventually convinced my D*ck that it was ok.
I bust one of those painful nuts cause my balls were so sad & blue.

She gave me dirty dome the following morning. She eventually got a new gig.
are communication faded to black. I only smanged it out that 1 time.

the end. :(

Ayesha Curry Vs. Thots Pt. 2

In the past couple years, Ayesha Curry has gone from being known as Stephen Curry's wife to the mother of Riley to a media star in her own right, sharing recipes and happy family life experiences via her website, YouTube channel and upcoming cookbook.

Now, the doting Warriors wife and mom is set to join Food Network's stable of celebrity chefs with the network announcing Thursday that she'll headline her own series. Tentatively titled "At Home With Ayesha," the series has yet to get a premiere date.

That news was enough to set off a new round of Twitter love/hate for Curry, who reportedly moved into a $3.2 million hilltop Walnut Creek home last spring and whose profile proclaims herself a "believer, wife, mommy and living in my indestructible bubble of happiness."

On one side are apparently men of color who extoll the pretty 27-year-old as the ideal mate; on the other side are what appears to be women who find her to be annoying, self-satisfied and judgmental of anyone who hasn't made her particular life choices -- which some see as retrograde or as only available to someone lucky enough to marry a rich and successful athlete.

Then again, women have also come to her defense, saying it's misogyny to slam her, that it's demeaning to slam any woman for just being who she chooses to be.

With the cooking show's announcement, a new round of memes and jokes cropped up Thursday night and Friday morning, some showing photos of her in the kitchen, with captions presenting her as saying sexually suggestive things or as voicing views that are condescending to other women.

"Ayesha Curry is currently being roasted via twitter," posted

@faithfulblack man Friday morning. "Twitter has given Ayesha Curry a persona she didn't really ask for and so many feeding in to it," wrote users.

@Tommyguns asked "Why black women hate Ayesha curry? All she does is be faithful in a relationship....oh I see why y'all mad."

To which, another user called her "a patriarchy princess" and @DarkSkinnBeauty replied: "It's not that Ayesha Curry is hated, she's just the stereotype of 'what a woman should be' mold we're trying to break."

This latest explosion of Curry social media love/hate comes in a week in which she saw herself unwittingly pitted against Oakland R&B singer Kehlani. As with many social media feuds involving female celebrities, neither woman initiated it.

Rather it cropped up in the Twittersphere, among users who like to use the relative anonymity of the web to spout of all kinds of things, often hateful.

But among users, it also appears to be the case that they are seeing different female celebrities as standing in as representatives in an ongoing culture war. Each celebrity offers up a different model about how contemporary women should look, act and conduct their lives.

As writer Stereo Williams explained in his Daily Beast commentary earlier this week, "How Ayesha Curry and Kehlani Became Internet Misogynists New Obsession," Curry has become "the poster child for a sort of idealized, new age Stepford wife."

Curry, a devout Christian, is considered to be attractive and respectable, advocating for modest dress and "classier" standards, he wrote.

In fact, Curry last got the Internet buzzing in December when she decried one aspect of popular fashion: the trend of women, and of girls, to show lots flesh, often suggesting that showing how "hot" they are is a sign of their empowerment.

Curry was having none of it. She tweeted, "Everyone's into barely wearing clothes these days huh? Not my style. I like to keep the good stuff covered up for the one who matters." Once again, some men chimed in to say they admired Mrs. Curry's class, while some women took offense, wondering if she was lecturing them from her perch as the mate of an NBA superstar.

This culture war with Curry at the center, no doubt, will continue.

... say "yay."

All oppose... Fuck yall!!

Anyway, the idea originated from the exchange between @MANOFAFRICA and myself in another thread where the chick in question deleted her videos since the the thread's creation last night. I thought it was a cool idea to bring to fruition if done right.
Damn, is there any way of saving/downloading the vids? A program maybe?

Yes. I was tryna do that and up em to my Google Drive before they got clapped.

savedeo.com [for youtube, IG videos, twitter videos, fb videos, vimeo, et al.]
downloadgram.com [for IG videos and pictures]

There's also the Tubemate app (google it, since it doesn't show up in most app stores).

If you're on a PC/laptop, Real Player installs a video download add-on to most browsers.

Great, thanks I will try savedeo, she will probably upload vids again. Think illpix community should set up a cloud where we download vids and save em to the cloud allowing all users access? The same thing happened with Jessica Kylie, deleted a bunch of vids.

This same thing literally JUST happened on IG where this chick uploaded a pic and sniped it not long after (it said 7 mins)

I agree. I think we should create a thread and have it stickied for suggestions. Google gives you 15GB free storage so it wouldn't be a problem to make a throwaway accound to host the pics and vids. I had to snatch up the video of K. Michelle running around nekkid and immortalize it that way. When the shit went viral she clapped it, so I was lucky to get it when I did

Report: GTA 6 Is In Development, We Once Came Close To GTA: Tokyo

The Grand Theft Auto series has never left the US—or its fictional account of it, anyway—but apparently it once came close to boarding Air O for a trip to Tokyo. According to our friends at TechRadar, a source close to Rockstar says the developer was "serious" about making a GTA set in Tokyo, but pulled the plug after assessing the difficulty of moving the series outside the US. According to the source, Rockstar even made a trip to Japan to scope out the city.

TechRadar also notes that in 2003, Rockstar applied for trademarks to protect "GTA: Tokyo" and "GTA: Bogota," and though the news was reported at the time, I don't recall it causing much of a stir. I think we all assumed: Sure, GTA can go anywhere, sounds good! But TR's source says that Rockstar decided against changing GTA staples like cars and brands. Speculation on my part factors in how much GTA has embraced itself as satire of American culture since then—to do the same for Japanese culture in GTA's not-exactly-nuanced style would be such a departure that I can't see it ever happening.

But while GTA: Tokyo may never exist, TR's source says that GTA 6 is in development (no big surprise), though a location hasn't been decided. I expect it'll be at least a couple years before we hear anything official on it. The gap between GTA 4 and GTA 5 was about five years, which would put GTA 6 in 2018 or 2019, if history repeats.

We've reached out to Rockstar for comment, and will update this story if we hear back.
