Bruno Mars Gets Super Bowl Gig
Updated: September 7, 2013, 5:57 PM ET
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Grammy-winner Bruno Mars will sing at halftime of the Super Bowl in February, a person familiar with the NFL's entertainment plans told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made. The official word is expected to come at an event in New York's Times Square on Sunday.

The NFL's regular season began Thursday, and the first full slate of games is Sunday.

The Super Bowl will be played Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Halftime shows have drawn more than 100 million television viewers in the United States alone in past years.

Beyonce was the star of this year's Super Bowl halftime show in February in New Orleans, where the Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.

Some recent halftime performers at the NFL's championship game were Madonna in 2012, The Black Eyed Peas with Usher and Slash in 2011, The Who in 2010, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in 2009.

Mars is one of pop music's top acts, with several No. 1 hits, including his most recent, "When I Was Your Man."

The 27-year-old singer-songwriter-producer was honored for best male video and choreography for "Treasure" at the MTV Video Music Awards last month.

Mars, who was born Peter Hernandez, released his platinum-selling debut, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," in 2010, and released his second album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," last year. His hits include "Locked Out of Heaven," "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade."

I'm not mad at this decision, but since the Super Bowl is being played at the Meadowlands, they should have asked Jay-Z or Lady Gaga to do the halftime show, (since she's from New York.) I guess Hov and Gaga maybe to "edgy," for mainstream audiences, especially Gaga. I also think the NFL should have let Billy Joel (the quintessential New York artist,) do the halftime show also. I am glad that the NFL has finally gotten back to having relevant people do the halftime show, instead of these old ass niggas since they insist on having this halftime spectacle.

I don't really like Tyga like that but I got to hand it to him it's still pretty good.

Full disclosure: I've only listened to one Wheelchair Jimmy album and I've never heard a Nicki-lodeon Minaj album but I do follow Wayne somewhat...everyone knows his shit is basura though.

This is just me giving credit where it's due, take it or leave it but I think this joint is pretty nice. The features carry it a lot but this is that kind of era, it's all good.

TV&ShowbizReal Housewives Of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks' husband, Apollo Nida, charged with bank fraud and identity theft

Forget the drama on the small screen, behind the scenes the Real Housewives Of Atlanta is even more dramatic.

On Thursday, star Phaedra Parks’ husband, Apollo Nida, was reportedly questioned by US Marshals in Atlanta, Georgia and charged with bank fraud and identity theft.

Apollo - who often appears on his wife's reality show - appeared before US District Court on Thursday but was granted pretrail bail.

Facing charges: On Thursday, Real Housewives Of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks' husband, Apollo Nida, (pictured 2011) was reportedly questioned by US Marshals in Atlanta, Georgia and charged with bank fraud and identity theft.

According to Access Atlanta, Apollo was investigated by the Secret Service's Counterfeit and U.S. Treasury Check Squad.

According to the site - who apparently obtained the complaint against the reality star - Apollo allegedly, 'created fake companies, enabling him to access databases to find individuals to rip off'.

Awaiting trial: Apollo is currently on a $25,000 bond after receiving bail and will face a preliminary hearing February 12

'He opened fake bank accounts under those real names and funneled stolen U.S. Treasury checks and auto loan proceeds into those accounts.'

Apollo was allegedly named by the original target of the investigation, a woman identified as Gayla St. Julien, who was arrested in September last year and allegedly had $3 million in multiple bank accounts tied to her.

According Access Atlanta: 'St. Julien ''described herself as Nida’s right hand b**** in executing the legwork of his fraud schemes.'

She allegedly told an investigator she received 'scraps' compared to what Apollo was earning.

According to the site: 'Nida would allegedly steal real people’s identities and have St. Julien pretend to be them to open bank accounts.

'She would then deposit fraudulent auto loan checks, stolen U.S. Treasury checks, stolen retirement checks issued to Delta Airlines employees, and checks in the names of real people that were owed unclaimed property from various state and federal government agencies.'

The site also said the complaint against the star claimed he opened a fake auto dealership and applied for auto loans in the names of stolen identities.

Apollo has previously spent time in prison - from 2004 to 2009 - for auto title fraud.

The year he was released he married Phaedra, who is ironically an attorney. The couple have two children together Dylan, 10 months, and Ayden, 3.

Apollo is currently on a $25,000 bond and will face a preliminary hearing February 12.

Am I Racist?

According to Wikipedia, "Whites constitute the majority of the U.S. population, with a total of 223,553,265 or 72.4% of the population in the 2010 United States Census."

So Whites comprise 72% of the population but there aren't any good white rappers. Rap has been around since 1979 and you can count the relevant white rappers/rap groups on one hand;

1. Rick Rubin
2. The Beastie Boys
3. Eminem
4. Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis

So why is it that there's so few relevant White rappers if whites make up 72% of the population? Numerically and statistically, you'd think that good white rappers would outnumber the good black rappers. Especially when you consider that studios are owned by whites, radio stations are owned by whites and retail stores are owned by whites. It would seem that whites would have an easier time recording an album, getting signed, getting promotion and getting platinum records and awards. Why so few good white rappers?

Am I the problem? Am I the bad guy because I played the race card?

How Black Culture Has Failed Hip-Hop

Let me start out by saying that this "rant" is completely off the top. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis probably haven't even had the time to realize they're holding onto awards that they know, in their hearts, they don't deserve. Lorde's awful performance that spits in the face of many rap artists is probably still ringing in the audience's ears.

That's two coined "hip-hop" acts that are clearly not hip-hop. Them not being "hip-hop" has nothing to do with the fact that they're white, but everything to do with their sound and their fan base. It's borderline comedic watching people argue that these artists belong in the same genre with the Kendricks, Kwelis, Commons, and Fiascos. Why did I use "conscious" or "backpack" rappers in this argument? Simple. Mainstream media, a.k.a. white people, would have you believe that all rappers are irresponsible, gun-toting, jewelry wearing, crack pushing thugs. Richard Sherman need not apply. Yet if you ask a white guy, who thinks rap begins and ends with Eminem, about Talib Kweli, you'll get the blankest stare known to mankind. The irony that Talib toured with Macklemore is not lost on me either.

So how is this "black culture's" problem? Well, for starters, here you have a group like The Roots, who have an incredible emcee in Black Thought, who has spoken on everything from politics, society's ills, the black plight, and enjoying life, not getting shine outside of a Jimmy Fallon set. WTF?! Enter Macklemore, who raps about the same shit that 50-11 rappers before him rapped about (sans the homosexuality), put him on a pop beat, make him white and watch people coo at him like he's a newborn baby. "OMG! He's so refreshing!" "Yeah, he's not like those other rappers who only talk about bitches and hoes." "His music is fun!"

But the thing is black people, this shit ain't new. Nor is it unwarranted. We're more apathetic than Miami Heat fans. Our ADHD is awe-inspiring. We ALLOWED this to happen. We won't support any of our own artists, good or bad. It doesn't matter if you're Janelle Monae or Trinidad James. We ALLOW outsiders to dictate the direction of our genre. They didn't have to break the door down, we opened it and said, "Come on in suh!" Why wouldn't they take advantage and exploit all of our hard work, history and originality? There's no longer resistance. No longer a backbone. No longer pride and sense of self. Unity is a foreign word in the land of black America. A finger is easily broken. A fist, however? Not so much.

This "rant" of mine could go on forever. There are so many things wrong when a "rap" album like Kendrick's GKMC can be overlooked because one of his peers is white, thrifty, and thought he was gay at 12. All while having subpar lyricism on a pop backdrop. Or when Justin Timberlake can win in a R&B category and Janelle Monae can't even get a mention. Something's gotta give. Either we continue to acquiesce to their whims, place material things above our self respect and lose everything, or wake up and do something about the nonsense.

Hopefully the latter occurs. Soon. Until it does though, go listen to Mos Def's Black On Both Sides and pay close attention the intro. If you want to know where hip-hop is going, ask yourself, "Where are our people going?" Because if these Grammys are any indication of black people in hip-hop, then we're not going anywhere... We're already gone.

/rant.
