LALakers_2nd.jpg

Well with free agency around the corner with a lot of big decisions to be made, I figured we might as well start talking about it now so we can avoid the cluttered NBA Season Thread.

What are we gonna do with Dwight? Will D'Antonio be back? Do we trade Pau now that has value slightly increased at the end of the season? Have we seen the last of MWP? What are we gonna do about our back court? Earl Clark is an unrestricted free agent. How will Kobe look next year? Should we go after the likes of Dorell Wright or Anthony Morrow?

It's a lot to talk about. Hopefully we can avoid injuries this year and have a much better season than last year.

Roll call to all my IC Lake Show brethren!!

Deadly batch of Heroin(sold on the streets as Theraflu,Bud Ice) kills 22 feinds in Pennsylvania...

post-gazette.com/local/crime/2014/01/27/Allegheny-County-police-continue-heroin-overdose-investigation/stories/201401270126
Local death toll from powerful heroin hits 22

Federal, state and local drug investigators are working together on multiple fronts to combat the spread of a deadly batch of heroin that has killed as many as 22 in four counties since Jan. 19 and resulted in nonfatal overdoses throughout Pittsburgh.

Despite authorities' increasing concern, an apparent lull Monday in suspected overdose deaths in Allegheny County provided a glimmer of hope that the worst might have passed. But no one is ready to declare the emergency over.

"What we don't know is, was this a limited amount and has it run its course, or is this just the tip of the iceberg," said Neil A. Capretto, medical director at Gateway Rehabilitation Center.

At least three patients checked themselves into Gateway over the weekend, at least in part because they had become scared for their lives after using the potentially deadly batch of heroin.

"All of them told similar stories," Dr. Capretto said. "Dealers warned them this was stronger and to use it carefully."

As the Pennsylvania State Police, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and other law enforcement agencies collaborated on tracking down the drug's supply chain, state and local authorities treated the overdoses as a public-health crisis requiring an education campaign, and street-level detectives tried to ferret out the dealers who sold the bad heroin.

In Pittsburgh, narcotics detectives and others working undercover have been asked to reach out to their informants. Narcotics Cmdr. Linda Rosato-Barone said police were following several leads Monday, but she did not go into detail for fear of jeopardizing the investigation.

"Everybody's helping out," said Detective Tony Marcocci, who is investigating two suspected fatal overdoses in Lower Burrell and Washington Township for the Westmoreland County district attorney's office.

"One of the things that we've tried to do is raise the public awareness about this. There is a killer out there, and we want to try to stop people from using it," Detective Marcocci said. "We are going after the addicts. They can very well supply it to another addict. But ultimately our goal is to go after the source -- the actual dealers -- whether they be in our county or another county."

Detective Marcocci believes the heroin is coming in from outside Pennsylvania.

"The typical pipeline would be from out of state into Allegheny County, and then from Allegheny County it goes to other regional counties," Detective Marcocci said.

Authorities believe that the heroin -- likely laced with the potent painkiller fentanyl -- is being sold throughout Western Pennsylvania under the street names of "Theraflu," "Bud Ice" and "Income Tax," according to Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, who issued a prepared statement that included the 22-death tally.

If lab tests confirm the suspicions of Ms. Kane and local investigators, the number of overdose deaths would exceed the 18 who died in 1988 in the infamous "China White" case, in which 3-methylfentanyl, a more powerful form of fentanyl, was sold as potent heroin.

At least 12 fatalities and dozens of overdoses occurred locally during another national outbreak of heroin laced with fentanyl in 2006 that killed scores of drug users in Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, St. Louis and elsewhere.

Although authorities with long memories are well aware of the "China White" cases, they are not quite ready to declare the current situation a similar epidemic.

"Would I call it the same? Not until we confirm exactly what it's made of," Cmdr. Rosato-Barone said.

Laboratory tests are pending on both blood and urine from suspected overdose victims and on heroin found with the deceased.

Authorities cannot conclusively say yet whether fentanyl is involved in all cases, if the three different brand names found on heroin stamp bags contain the same batch of heroin, and whether all 22 suspicious deaths indeed resulted from heroin overdoses.

"China White" echoes loudly today. Detective Marcocci, who has worked narcotics and vice cases for 28 years, drew parallels between then and now.

"The sad reality is I can remember working with an addict, I was working undercover, what she wanted to use was China White. That's just where all the addicts want to go, is to the most powerful stuff. Their belief is it's not going to happen to them," Detective Marcocci said. "That's one of the things that does scare me right now is the media attention to 'Theraflu.' I think a lot of people are going to be looking for it."

The current crisis came to light Friday, when Allegheny County medical examiner Karl Williams and authorities in Westmoreland County issued alerts about deaths in both jurisdictions, as well as at least one suspected overdose death in Rayburn, Armstrong County, on Jan. 19.

At that point, "Theraflu" was the brand name eliciting concern.

But on Monday Dr. Williams reported that "Bud Ice" and "Income Tax" were also potentially connected to the deadly heroin.

Also on Monday, Homestead police announced the discovery of stamp bags of "Bud Ice" when they executed a search warrant Sunday night.

Pittsburgh narcotics Lt. Robert Roth said each of the city's six police precincts had seen at least two overdoses, not all of them fatal.

"The 'Bud Ice' -- we're not positive if that was 'Theraflu' that was just re-stamped or if it's the same batch or whatnot. That would have to be confirmed with the crime lab," Lt. Roth said.

Victims in Pittsburgh range in age from 24 to 50, Lt. Roth said. Six of the city's cases, including two fatalities, involved "Theraflu." Two cases, both nonfatal, involved "Bud Ice." As of Monday evening, Pittsburgh police had not seen any cases involving "Income Tax."

Most of the overdoses, the lieutenant said, involved people who used drugs found in unmarked stamp bags. Often when medics arrive, the victims are unconscious. Sometimes, he said, others have cleaned up the scene, making it harder for detectives to recover evidence.

What makes the heroin so dangerous is its ultrapotent high that entices addicts.

"Conventional wisdom would tell you that this is really bad and it will kill you and to stay away from it," said Barry Fox, a retired Pittsburgh narcotics detective who helped break the "China White" case.

"Unfortunately, there also is dope wisdom which tells them, 'If that can kill you, it must be powerful and really, really good. All I have to do is take it slow.' "

The dealers who manufacture and sell the laced heroin are about one thing, Detective Marcocci said: market share.

Dr. Capretto agreed.

"How do you separate yourself to show you have a more attractive product?" he said. "The way you do that is to have fentanyl-laced heroin."

But the downside is enormous.

"It's not like this comes from an FDA pharmacy," Dr. Capretto said. "You don't know what's in it. We know that the advice not to use heroin in the first place falls on deaf ears for people with addiction.

"If you don't heed that advice and you are going to use, I would recommend using significantly less because if you don't, this could be the last time you shoot up."

Something we all love...

A Racist Turn in India

By NILANJANA S. ROY

NEW DELHI — The Africans — Nigerians, Ghanaians, Ugandans — began leaving my neighborhood in New Delhi around December. Each week, more and more families exited. Some went to parts of Delhi considered more accepting of Africans; others to areas where the residents were thought to be less interfering in general. I have heard that some of the Ghanaian families had gone back to Africa, but I don’t know that for sure.

For years, they had been a part of the swirl of cultures, languages and races that makes up this part of the capital. The Nigerian women in their bright dresses out for evening strolls and the Cameroonian family with the curious-eyed baby at the ice-cream van had made a life for themselves alongside the Afghans, Tamils and Iranians.

On Oct. 31, about a month before the departures started, a Nigerian national, rumored to have been in the drug trade, was found dead in Goa. Nigerians in the coastal state protested his murder as an act of racism, while posters read: “We want peace in Goa. Say no to Nigerians. Say no to drugs.” One state minister threatened to throw out Nigerians living illegally. Another equated them with a cancer. He later apologized, adding that he hadn’t imagined there would be a “problem” with his statement.

The controversy has reverberated across the country, including in Delhi, 1,200 miles away, where the tolerance of African neighbors has turned into suspicion and even hostility.

One night, a police constable rang my doorbell. “Have you seen any man from the Congo entering and leaving the building?” he asked. “African man,” he clarified. He said he had received a report that a local resident was friendly with Africans, and he wanted to know, was this true? The question surprised me; neighborhood battles here are waged over water and parking spaces, not over ethnicity. Now neighbors had become nervous of neighbors.

Once the African communities had been singled out, complaints against them bubbled up like filthy water, in Jangpura, in Khirki Extension, in the alleyways off Paharganj, anywhere in Delhi they lived.

The fragile hospitality gave way to a familiar litany of intolerance: They were too loud, exuberant and dirty; the women were loose, the men looked you directly in the eye, they were drug takers and traffickers, and worse.

Residents of Khirki Extension, whose rambling lanes had seen an influx of artists, journalists and migrants, conducted their own investigation of their African neighbors, which they called the “black beauty” sting.

Coinciding with the city’s darkening mood, the newly elected Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi started a wave of cleanups as part of its mission to control “lawlessness.” The city’s law minister, Somnath Bharti, led a raid into Khirki Extension, claiming to be acting on residents’ complaints that Nigerians and Ugandans were involved in prostitution and drug trafficking. Media reports suggest that on the night of Jan. 15, he entered Africans’ homes with a group of vigilantes, without a warrant. In the fracas, a Ugandan woman was allegedly forced to give a urine sample, on the street, in the middle of the crowd. After she filed a complaint, Delhi’s court ordered the Police Department to pursue her case against Mr. Bharti.

These recent events have awakened dormant prejudices against Africans in India, aggravated by our tendency to prize fair skin over dark. “Habshi,” derived from the word “Abyssinian,” has become a common epithet for people of African descent.

So, on one hand, the racist turn in Delhi and Goa is unsurprising. On the other hand, we have a long, and neglected, history of cross-migration with Africa. While Indians have been settling on that continent since at least the 15th century, African roots in India run even deeper. Africans were brought over in numbers around the 13th century as slaves, but also as generals, guards, merchants, bodyguards and craftsmen. Many never went back. Now tens of thousands are here to study, and others work as chefs and in the garment and textile businesses, among other industries.

Despite our close ties and the shared history of colonialism, Africa doesn’t figure on the Indian map of curiosity and desire. Our admiration of China’s economic prowess is commonplace and unabashed; we are obsessed with the West, in terms of education, ideals of beauty and economic might. But Africa is invisible. Racist views can be spouted without consequence. Africa simply doesn’t matter.

There will be few repercussions for the Aam Aadmi Party if it continues with blanket policies against Africans. The party won on the promise of change, yet here it is, proving that it shares the same blindness as other, older parties.

These days, the Afghans and Indians stroll in my neighborhood park, enjoying the winter breeze. The Ghanaian and Cameroonian families moved away when their landlords doubled the rent only for them; the young Nigerian women left after one police visit too many.

Delhi’s residents say that the city belongs to everybody, because it belongs to nobody. As Bangalore and Mumbai became insular possessions, with political parties often driving out anyone who was from elsewhere, the capital claimed that it had room for all kinds of migrants, expats and outsiders. If the Aam Aadmi Party continues the divisiveness that older parties have excelled at, we’ll soon find reasons to go after all the people who live differently from “us,” who don’t belong here, who should go back to the places they came from.

Russell Simmons Says Kendrick Lamar "Is Absolutely A Better Rapper" Than Macklemore

Russell Simmons said he understands why Macklemore did well at the Grammys Sunday (January 26), including winning Best Rap Album for The Heist, the Seattle rapper’s album with Ryan Lewis. But the Def Jam Recordings co-founder said that he thinks Kendrick Lamar is a better artist.

"Kendrick is absolutely a better rapper, and Macklemore had one of the most inspiring, socially conscious songs of the year and that is what did well for him,” Simmons said during an AMA yesterday (January 27), likely referring to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love,” which was nominated for Song of the Year at the Grammys. "He’s a great rapper, but there is no evidence anywhere that he’s a better artist than Lamar."

Nonetheless, Simmons says that he wished he could have been a part of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love” single and that Macklemore has what he’s looking for in Hip Hop right now.

"Lyrics & social consciousness,” Simmons said. "Someone with lyrics & flow like Kendrick, with the social message of Macklemore. Poets should touch peoples’ hearts, and possessing that ability is what’s most important."

Macklemore says that his four Grammy wins Sunday have both positive and negative aspects, including winning Best Rap Album over Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city.

“It’s the blessing and the curse, a little bit more the curse,” the Seattle rapper said during an interview with New York radio station Hot 97 that was published yesterday (January 27). “First and foremost, Kendrick [Lamar] is a friend of mine. He’s somebody that I love his music and, in my opinion, had the best Rap album of the year. And knowing how the Grammys usually go, I knew that there would be a great chance that we’d win that award and, in essence, rob Kendrick. That’s what happened tonight. It kind of sucks. I think we made a great album. I think that Kendrick made a better Rap album.”

Is it better to have a bad father or no father at all?

$
0
0
It seems like an obvious question at first. Here's my thinking on it: Let's say you have a dad but he is negative and/or abusive. Roughly half the time he manages to teach you things that a father ought to teach a son, but the other half of the time he mentally fucks you up either directly or inadvertently by being a hater, angry, or weak in the face of his own fears. Is it better to have a malfunctioning dad than to grow up with no father at all?

In an alternate scenario, you have no dad in the picture at all. You're not receiving any of the fucked up masculinity lessons but you're not getting any of the good ones, either. It is possible to find mentors and role models when you're fatherless, although it remains largely a matter of luck. Sometimes having the half-functioning father actually prevents you from breaking away completely and finding good mentors and role models.

I have the half-fucked up dad. He taught me some things that have served me well, but he also instilled a lot of negativity that held me back, which I'm working to correct. The more I become my own man the more I look around at other men and wonder how they came to be. Are they self-taught? Did they have good dads?

Weigh in.

GPCGMR - 'EVE Online' virtual war costing hundreds of thousands of real dollars

$
0
0
Los Angeles - James Carl was asleep when the first shot was fired.

As he slumbered away in Costa Mesa, the 29-year-old banker's virtual space fleet was under siege early Monday morning in what's become the most destructive and expensive battle in the 10-year history of "EVE Online," the gargantuan online sci-fi video game.

"EVE Online" -- with more than 500,000 players from around the world piloting starships, trading goods and engaging in galactic espionage -- utilizes its own in-game currency, and Carl expects the damage from Monday's conflict to be the game equivalent of about $500,000 in real-world cash, based on data compiled from within the game.

The skirmish first erupted after a member of Carl's coalition missed a payment to protect an area that's been used as a staging ground for a war raging between Carl's Pandemic and N3 coalition versus CFC and Russian forces.

"Supposedly, it was set up for auto-pay, just like any other bill in real life, but either that didn't happen or the money wasn't in the wallet, and then everything just escalated out of control from there," said Carl. "The dust is still settling on that issue. Everyone is just focused right now on fighting to try to regain control of the system."

During Monday's encounter, more than 100 Titan vessels were destroyed. The megaships, which are akin to the Death Star from "Star Wars," are the largest ships in the game and are worth about $3,000 each in real-world money. The Titans also take months for gamers to build. That's months in real time: a lot of nights, weekends and days-off actually spent constructing the virtual warships.

Carl was awakened by a messaging app on his phone used by alliance members alerting him that their system B-R5RB was under attack by rivals. He wasn't scheduled to work in real life Monday, so he spent the entire day sending virtual ships into the fray. He said dozens of his alliance members took off work to join the fight, which is being waged by more than 4,000 players -- and spectated by thousands more on the game streaming service Twitch.

It's an unprecedented battle unique to "EVE," which simulates a universe of more than 7,000 stars and whose virtual economy is linked to real-world money, unlike many other online role-playing games, such as "World of Warcraft" and "Lord of the Rings Online."

"I'd be lying if I said our servers weren't sweating a bit," said "EVE Online" spokesman Ned Coker of CCP Games, the Reykjavik, Iceland-based video game developer who created the online universe. "Allowing players free movement wherever they want in a game with over half a million players means for some pretty tricky technological requirements."

To compensate for thousands of starship captains battling each other online, Coker said CCP Games instituted what it calls "time dilation," which slows down the game's servers to about 10 percent of normal time, so players aren't dropped and their commands are issued in the order in which they were received. Carl said it has made for a massive but slow battle.

"In many ways it's a quintessential sci-fi experience, where thousands of people from all around the globe are waging a huge conflict that will have real repercussions on the politics, economy and social structures of a virtual universe," said Coker.

The real-world value of "EVE" currency is based on an actual exchange rate set within the game, but the primary basis for value in the game's virtual economy is the time and skill that gamers put into such concepts as the mining of minerals, the selling of goods and services, or the stealing of goods and money -- just don't get caught.

However, if players want a shortcut, they can put real-world money into the game to buy "EVE" currency and equipment, as determined by the exchange rate, but the money can only be exchanged from real to virtual.

Meanwhile, Carl is optimistic his coalition will recover from the latest "EVE" upheaval.

"It looks like CFC is winning, but we're hoping now that all of our U.S. players are online, we'll turn the tide," said Carl. "Whatever happens, we'll keep going. 'EVE' is a universe full of grudges and constantly changing politics. If we were to lose, we'll rebuild. Then, we'll go back and start another war."
